Dear Friends, As I sit down to write this, Spring has arrived, Easter come and gone, and I'm still whirling from Christmas and New Years! Where do the days go? It seems that this new year has brought upon some difficult economic times for all. At Market last Fall the vendors and fabric reps were asking us how we were doing as many of their clients were feeling a deep economic crunch. "Us?" we replied. "We're doing great!" Seemed like the economic woes were someone else's problem 6 months ago. Now it has caught up to us. Many of you tell me about cut work hours, lost jobs and we all feel the sting of rising fuel and food costs. I know I've cut back on some luxuries like weekly manicures, lunches or dinners out and more planning when it comes to my driving habits. But I still must quilt and knit! There are sacrifices to be made there too, but with a little creative thinking we won't have to give up much! Remember the old saying about putting a little away for a rainy day? Well that would be your fabric and yarn stash! We all have some and now is the time to use it. I know some of it's been in the closet for not months but years. You say, "But that fabric is so dated now, my tastes have changed, I don't even like it anymore", or "I was saving that for just the right project, what that is I don't really know yet, but....." Let the fabric and yarn stash Doctors at Sew What help you! Bring in your stash and let us help you pull it all together into a new exciting project that will be economical and fun. Our Stash Doctors are highly trained, experienced professionals eager to prescribe a cure! Here's a little bio on the Doctors. Dr Yes (formerly Dr. No, but with years of therapy she has a much more positive attitude): Karen has the vision to turn the most helpless pathetic stash into a new trendy quilt with the recommendation of one our paper piecing or appliqué patterns. Dr Tink (That's knit spelled backwards, has years of experience doing just that): Marilyn can spot and solve a knitting boo-boo like no one else. Do you have a knitting project you got discouraged with and put away? Can't remember where you are in the pattern? You need the expert help of our Chief of Knitting Surgery.
Dr Spock (who said she was a he? Our Dr Spock is a two-time grandma in less than 2 years): Kathy has gained immense doctoral training in a very short period of time with creative ideas for baby quilts, knit sweaters, hats and even animals! She can share her quick easy ideas and help you turn even none juvenile fabrics into contemporary nursery ensembles.
Dr. Karedill (Dr. Killdare's evil twin): Kerry can spot an ugly fabric with her eyes closed! Then use it in a way that transforms a hum drum quilt into a piece of art! Kerry has been studying under the tutelage of the mad scientist Magatha.
Dr. Magatha (holds many credentials, DMV, ABC, CCP, TFL, in addition to being our cosmetic surgeon): Maggie is our resident Dr of all fiber art mediums available at the store. If you have fabric you don't know what to do with, she has a procedure to transform it into something totally unlike what it was. Let her show you the marvels of paint, dye and Angelina!
Dr. Phyllis (distant cousin to Dr. Phil, she has the never-ending knowledge of gauge, fiber content, pattern compatibility and basic answers to all my questions): Debbie can help you pick the perfect pattern for those skeins you bought with some intended purpose long forgotten.
Dr Lori (a Dr. Laura know-it-all, who very instinctively relies on the advice of her capable colleagues to solve any of your problems).
Well this might all sound silly but each of us here have wonderful individual talents to help you maximize using your stash and to keep you quilting and knitting! I am a true believer of making lemonade when life gives you lemons, so let’s keep a positive attitude during these difficult economic times and have some fun. We're changing our format a bit for the summer newsletter and class schedule. Since many go on vacation during July and August, we decided not to schedule classes during those months, that doesn’t mean there won't be impromptu classes, it just means you need to check your E-mail or call for info on last minute activities. Regular classes will resume in September with a newsletter in August. Give us your feedback so we know if it's a good change. Check out the WHAT’S NEW section for the latest in fabrics, yarn, books and notions! Hope to see you soon, Lori
